The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010 killed 230,000 people and left another 1.5 million homeless will be six months ago on the 12th of July.
The Beggars Group last year saw 4AD release the charity compilation, Dark Was The Night, to much success. More details on the release here. They helped raise in excess of $1 million for the Red Hot Organization, a AIDS awareness charity who also have close links to Haiti. Of the proceeds, they issued a $150,000 emergency grant within days for the not-for-profit organisation, Partners In Health, to use in their efforts to provide immediate assistance to the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake.
In addition, along with other artists and labels, the Beggars Group donated unique items for an appeal by Oxfam to help them with an eBay auction for funds to help their work in Haiti, raising over £2,000 from the three special donated items alone.
Oxfam would like to thank each fan who got involved. The auction proved incredibly valuable and the proceeds helped over 420,00 people – by providing clean water, shelter and basic sanitation, as well as by helping community canteens provide daily hot meals. Oxfam have made a video to show how the money has been spent and what a difference it has made. You can watch it here.
